During my six years on the board of directors, I was continually amazed by the number of times that some residents would spread hate and discontent regarding our decisions and actions. It highlighted the challenges of governance within a community. Our HOA Board is not a strict hierarchy; rather, they are a group that serves to represent the interests and needs of the members who voted them into office. It is essential for the board to seek to understand what their membership truly wants and needs, as this fosters better communication and a more harmonious community environment. Listening to the voices of the residents and addressing their concerns should be an ongoing commitment for every board member.
Do everyone a favor, including the board of directors and all members of the community, by discussing the various aspects of community life openly and honestly. Engaging in open dialogue can foster understanding and collaboration among all parties involved.
As a valued member of the community, it is essential that you take the initiative to reach out to your board of directors and openly communicate your thoughts and perspectives before a scheduled board meeting takes place. After all, they diligently post the agenda prior to every meeting, allowing everyone to prepare adequately. Likewise, it is equally important for board members to actively seek to understand and gather input from their members, fostering an environment of transparency and collaboration.
"At the end of the day, you cannot make everyone happy, as each individual has their own unique preferences and desires. However, by collaborating effectively and communicating openly, you can work together to achieve a desired outcome that satisfies as many people as possible while still honoring the diverse perspectives involved."
